Zanzibar Organic Spices Growers is an association of zanzibari farmers established in Kidichi, in the northwest of Stowntown, since the 90ies. We cultivate numerous spice species as cash crops, among lots of tropical trees and shrubs for auto consumption as cassava and banana. Spices and other crops are grown in a traditional organic way, preserving biodiversity and without any chemical and thus using only natural fertilization and pest-control practices such as composting and mulching. In 2006 from the initiative of Foum Ali Garu, manager of the Zanzibar Spices and Heritage Centre, we joined each other in an association with the main following objectives:
Exchanging ideas between members who are also spice farm owners
Developing spice tours and fellow activities for our visitors in an ecotouristic way
Our association endeavour to decorate the spice farms with different types of spices to enrich it for our visitors. The main activities in this title are to increase farm areas, to introduce new spice plants, to improve processing and packaging of spices and to set up recreational and enriching activities around the traditional spice tour.
In order to promote our spices onto the European market, we are currently committed in the organic EU certification since 2012 and our products can thus be considered as “under conversion”.
